ANSWERS FOR DEW TRIVIA:

1940: The rumors are true. Mountain Dew was born way back in the hills of Tennessee in the 1940s. The name Mountain Dew was first trademarked by two brothers, Barney and Ally Hartman, who ran a bottling plant in Knoxville. The Hartman's Mountain Dew, however, was a lemon-lime drink used as a mixer with whiskey.

1948: The first sketches of Willy the Hillbilly that adorned the Mountain Dew bottle were created in 1948 by John Brichetto.

1954: Tri-City Beverage in Johnson City became the first Mountain Dew franchise in 1954.

1958: Bill Bridgforth, who joined Tri-City Beverage in 1958 as plant manager, is credited with perfecting the flavor of Mountain Dew as we know it today.

The old red-and-white labels feature a hillbilly shooting at a revenuer fleeing an outhouse with a pig sitting in the corner. Under the Mountain Dew lettering on the bottle, there are names of individual bottlers, sellers, and towns. The names on the bottles are intended to make the product feel like the illegally made liquor cooked up in mountain stills. In fact, the name Mountain Dew is slang for "moonshine."

1964: Dew's appeal went national when Pepsi-Cola bought the franchise in 1964.

1973: Global advertising agency BBDO is awarded the Mountain Dew account in 1973. Gone are the days of hillbillies and outhouses, replaced with ads aimed at Dew's true market: Young, active outdoor types.

1988: Diet Dew slammed onto the scene in 1988, providing a great-tasting , low-sugar compliment to original Dew.

1993: "Do the Dew" tagline appeared in 1993 - along with the Dew Dudes - in the award-winning commercial "Been There, Done That."

1994: The Big Slam and Quick Slam was introduced in 1994.

1995: Singer Mel Torme fulfills a lifelong dream by appearing in a Mountain Dew TV spot in 1995. Mountain Dew sponsored the first-ever X-Games in 1995. The rest is extreme sports history.

2001: Mountain Dew Code Red and Amp Energy Drink burst onto the scene in 2001.

2002: Feeding off the success of Code Red, Diet Mountain Dew Code Red is introduced in 2002.

2006: Today, Mountain Dew's popularity has spread from the hills of Tennessee to become a global phenomenon.

In the early 1940's, two brothers, Ally and Barney Hartman, were bottling a lithiated-lemon ("7-up" flavor) drink as a personal mixer for hard-liquor. They jokingly called the drink "Mountain Dew" after Tennessee Mountain Moonshine.

In 1965, Pepsi announces the "Yahoo Mountain Dew&ldots; It'll tickle your innards" campaign.

LESSON

Mountain - word in the Bible 145 times

Dew - word in the Bible 35 times

Read: NIV Deuteronomy 32:1-3 Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.

Say: Tonight we are going to look at that impossible "Mountain" in all of our lives; living as a Christian. We are going to "Seek" some answers from each other, so we can "Solve" one of life's great challenges.

Read: Exodus 19:9-20 God said to Moses, "Get ready. I'm about to come to you in a thick cloud so that the people can listen in and trust you completely when I speak with you." Again Moses reported the people's answer to God.

God said to Moses, "Go to the people. For the next two days get these people ready to meet the Holy God. Have them scrub their clothes so that on the third day they'll be fully prepared, because on the third day God will come down on Mount Sinai and make his presence known to all the people. Moses went down the mountain to the people and prepared them for the holy meeting.

Say: Eventually, Moses brought the "Ten Commandments" to the people at the foot of the Mountain where they all began their journey to follow God.

Break into youth led small groups and discuss;

- What does each commandment mean and what all does it not include.

1. You shall have no other gods before me.

2. You shall not make for yourselves an idol.

3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

5. Honor your father and your mother.

6. You shall not murder.

7. You shall not commit adultery.

8. You shall not steal.

9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

10. You shall not covet.

- What common pit fall do youth face in following these.

GAME

Make a few glowing Mt. Dew bottles for the Guards - Watch vid. on PPt.

Underground Church - 4 part

The players are: Followers, Church, Guards, and Lions

All gather in one spot to begin the game. The Church is picked as a group of two or three and is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Lions become the Guards, and the Guards will become the Church for the next round.

The Lion's, (usually two) only purpose is to find the Church before the Christians can reach it, ending the game. They sneak around scarring Christians and Guards until they find the Church.

The Guards, (usually two) must carry visible flashlights when they are moving. No other light sources from anyone are allowed. The Guards try to keep the Christians from getting to the Church.  If a Guard tags a Christian, the Guards take only one Christian at a time and tosses them into "Jail" in our court yard, weather permitting. (If you don't have a court yard use any secluded room and keep only 6 Christians at a time. When the 7th is caught and brought to jail the 1st gets out.) Our court yard has 14 doors that lead back into the church at various levels and only one is open from the outside at a time. (We keep changing it during the round to make it more fun). The Christians must find the open door to return to the game.

The Christians try to find and hide with the Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is to the Lions. Christians may leave the Church and bring other Christians to it. If a Guard finds the Church they are not permitted to hang around. When the Church grows to include 1/3 of the total non-original Church and Christians the round is over and the Church has survived!

If you are not playing or a round is finished you must remain in the Youth or Activity Center.
