Lavatory Tango

Lock-in

The night's message is entitled, 'Potty Talk'.  We discussed the nature of our speech and how it affects others including profanity, putdowns, and disrespect.

Purchase two inexpensive toilets (just the base- no tank) and centered all of the games for the evening around them.

Also needed: toilet bucks, clue tickets, sponsor packets, post youth schedules, 20 toilet brushes, 4 plungers, 3-4 roles of masking tape, white duct tape, 6 party blow out horns, 8 liters of lemonade, 20 chocolate bar minis - Baby Ruth, garbage bags, 200 roles of TP

Divided the students into two teams at the beginning of the event, they can be any of the following:

Loos               Clappers          Waterclosets

Commodes       Thrones           Cans

Johns             Potties             Bogs

Dunnies          Blue Canoes     Thunder Boxes

Chamber Pots  Librarians

7:00 Free Time In the Gym

8:00 Loosening Up

(Toilet Bowl Roller Coaster)

Get four younger volunteers and have a sponsor take them back to a secluded room. Have that sponsor tell them that they will go up in front of the crowd all together. Each one will sit in a chair. The object is for them to act out a given scenario WITHOUT leaving the chair for one minute:

1. Pretend they are on a major roller coaster

2. Pretend they are riding a bull

3. Pretend they are being tortured

4. Pretend they are getting their shoulders rubbed and they like it a lot

Whoever does the best job - wins!

Meanwhile, the leader is in the other room telling the audience that the four people coming out are going to act out what they do when they are on the toilet. Let them go for a minute and then tell them what they were really doing!

Bobbing for Floaters

Used white duct tape to seal the bottom of the toilets, then fill the toilets with lemonade and placed about 15 small Baby Ruth chocolate bars in each toilet. The results look really disgusting!

Asked for two volunteers per team (four total). Have them race to bob for the chocolate bars! The same team members can tag their team-mate (like wrestling) to take over.  The first team to get them all wins!

Supplies needed: White duct tape, 4 Liters lemonade, 20 chocolate bar minis (Baby Ruth), and 2 bowls to spit the bars into

Swing Tango Time

Stay strictly to this genre - it really keeps everything alive!

9:00 Toilet Paper Blow Out

Have teams play relay style by taking turns standing on their teams chair and dropping one square of paper to one teammate standing on the floor who tries to catch it with a party blow out horn.

Toilet Hockey

Set the toilets on their side to use as goals. Pick 10 starters from each team and give each one a toilet brush, have the others sub in. Have a neutral zone to prevent goal tending.

Rock/Classic Rock Tango Time

10:00 Find the Youth Dude

Have kids form teams of 6-ish well-mixed people, and give each team the same clue at the same time to start the game. After kids figure out the clues, have them stay as a team to search the church building and find Kris with or without the item described in the clue. When they find Kris he'll give them a buck for the answer or two for the answer and the item. Then they return to the Activity Center to buy their next clue. All clues cost a buck. The team with the most bucks wins.

Hint: don't make a commotion when you find The Youth Dude, you'll be tipping other teams off as to where he is.

Make up some clue/riddles (see You Tube lock-in for our first version of this game)

11:00 Talk about a "Potty Mouth"!

POTTY TALK

Say: Teenagers hear harsh gossip, abusive words, and vulgar language everywhere. In fact, most of you would consider this normal in society. Certain words are built into our society's vocabulary-it's unavoidable to hear them in movies, on TV, on the radio, in songs, and in our schools. Tonight we're going to talk about the relationship between the Christian faith and the words you speak.

You probably don't realize how much negative language you use. Most of the time it's subconscious-you don't intent to hurt others with your language. Other times you do. No matter what, you've got to monitor the way you speak and the things you say.

Let's pick a word that's commonly said among our group-not a swear word, just any word or phrase that you use a lot. We'll write it on the white board. If, during this Potty Talk, someone says the word or words that you chose, you'll call each other on it. Each time someone says the word we'll give them a square of TP. Pay close attention to how you speak and the words you choose. It's hard to monitor your tongue! We'll see how many times you say this word without even thinking-including words or language that's crass or mean. This goes for all kinds of swear words, gossip, cut-downs, jokes, and other words that hurt others.

BIG MOUTH HAND OUT

1. Write three common slang phrases you or your friends use a lot (keep it clean!) and define them.

2. Share a few of your experiences below.

* A time when you felt hurt by something someone said about you.

* A time when you said something you wish you never said.

* A time when you thought something bad about someone else instead of saying it.

3. In your own words, what does this verse say about your language?

But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison." (James 3:8)

4. Which of these scenarios would you consider the most hurtful to others? Why?

__ Reaming out a sibling

__ Making a snide comment to your mom

__ Swearing after you stub your toe

__ Teasing a classmate about their clothes

__ Telling a teacher that you hate the class

__ Laughing at someone's mistake

__ Calling someone a loser

__ Giving your boyfriend or girlfriend the silent treatment

__ Cussing out a teammate

__ Making fun of someone's looks

The discussion, by numbers

1. As for your kids to share some slang expressions and explain them. Do they know how the expression got started?

2. Ask the group to share their experiences. Point out how easy it is to get into trouble with what they say. What's worse-saying something bad or thinking it?

3. Words can be deadly and can cause great pain to others. Like physical cuts, hurtful words take time to heal. Our tongue is a weapon-it can hurt others, cause problems, and even destroy relationships. God even warns us about it in the Bible.

4. Decide as a group which one is the worst and why. Who is hurt most in these situations? Which ones can your kids relate to the most?

The Close

Say: Blaise Pascal once said, "Cold words freeze people and hot words scorch them, bitter words make them bitter and wrathful words make them wrathful." On the other hand, kind and thoughtful words do wonders. Christians should be generous with them.

Your challenge tonight will be to hold each other and your friends and family members accountable for your language. If you struggle with using certain words, find a friend or parent that can call you on it. Swearing and put downs are like bad habits-they can be broken. It takes self-control, which other people can help you with. Set a personal goal tonight to change your language. Find one person who you've hurt by your language and apologize for your hurtful words. It is important to ask for forgiveness and heal our relationships with others.

 Free Tango Time

Any kind of music for this time filler...

12:00 Toilet Paper Bride

Bring 2 willing girls from each team up front. Give each team four rolls of toilet paper. The object of this game is to dress up these volunteers in a full wedding gown including veil, train, bouquet, etc., all using toilet paper. Then have them model their new wedding gowns around up front and give points or awards to the teams with the best outfit.

Play it again with the guys in gowns.

TP Flight Fight

For this game you need toilet paper and garbage bags. Keep the teams (For us it was the Loos and Clappers)...half go to one side, half to the other. Have leaders hand out the snow "snowballs" (rolls of toilet paper).

The object of the game is to have the least toilet paper on your side at the end of the game.

Count down and let them fly. Give teams 30-60 seconds to play. Make a judgment call when you yell, "Time!"

Snowball Fight Part Two:

First team to have their side entirely cleaned up wins the second part of the game.

Pop Tango Time

1:00 Toilet Paper Over Under

Age old "Over Under Relay." Divide teams.  On "go," each team passes the toilet paper, over the first person's head, under the next person's legs, over the next . . . unraveling it as you go. If toilet paper breaks it goes back to the front  to start again.

Plunger Head

In most hardware stores you can buy the pink plunger part separate from the stick. So get two plunger ends for every stick. Put one plunger end at each end of the stick. Tie a tennis ball by about 2 feet of string to the middle of the stick.

Use the teams and divide each into pairs. Have them run a relay by dangling the ball between an obstacle course of chairs. Each member has to put a plunger end on his/her forehead and together they have to navigate an identical course as their opponents.

2:30 Under Ground Church

Players are; Underground Church, Followers, or Guards.

There is one "Church" (a group of three).  The church is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Church will become the Guards for the next round.

There are "Guards" (number depends on the size of the "Church").  The Guards try to keep the church from growing.  If a Guard tags a follower the Guard and the follower must go to the jail.  The follower must remain in jail until at least three others are caught.  After the third follower is caught and brought to jail the group of followers is free to leave the jail after the count of 50.

The "Followers" try to find the Underground Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is.  If a Guard finds the Church the round is over.  But, if the Church has 7 members it take 2 Guards to end the round.  If the church has 12 members it will take all three Guards to end the round.  Guards may not yell for other Guards, they must go and find them.  During the time the out numbered guards are away gathering together, the church may move to a new hiding place.  Once the church reaches 17 the round is over and the UNDERGROUND CHURCH has survived!

4:00 Toilet Basketball Relay

Placed the toilets about 10 yards from the youth. The students take turns grabbing squares of toilet paper (we told them 4 squares max), dunking them into a bucket of water, and shooting the toilet paper wads into the toilet bowl. The team with the most TP balls in the toilet wins!

Supplies needed: 2 buckets w/ water, and 10 (5 per team) rolls TP, large tarp if playing indoors

Toilet Paper Firing Squad

Involves A LOT of clean up. You need several packs of toilet paper, depending on the number of youth you have.

Line one teams players against the stage wall. Randomly select two "marksmen" from the other team to pull off a wad of toilet paper and dip in a bucket of water, making it really soggy. Then they try to hit the other players who are allowed to move side to side from the blue carpet about 15-20 feet away. The last person to be hit and the runner-up are the two "marksmen" in the next round. Time each team on the wall the one that lasts the longest is the winner.
