Chicken Noodle Lock-in

9:00 NOODLEN PART 1

Set up tables to dry noodles on (in beverage center)

Wash and sanitize them

Line with tablecloths (red check and blue flowered)

Start the dish machine.

Windows: Open windows between kitchen and beverage center.

Helps with circulation (air and kids).

NOODLES - DRY PREPARATION

PLAN: You'll want to get more than 1/2 of the total noodles done in session 1.

Mix. (The person running the mixer needs to be over 18 - or at least close.)

Roll, cut, dry (Running the pasta machine is sort of a rite of passage and has generally been reserved for the high school kids.)

If you have a couple of parents come in before Friday and measure the dry ingredients into large Ziploc bags, it helps avoid any measuring mistakes that can sometimes happen when the kids cook together.

(Original)

Single recipe

Flour 2 cups

Salt 1 tsp

Eggs 2 whole + 1 yolk

Water 1 Tblsp + 1 tsp

(Altered)

(x13)

Flower 12 cups (50 lbs total)

Salt 2 Tblsp

Eggs 15 egg

Water 3/4 cup

Stir up noodles using commercial mixer with dough hook.

Dump 1 bag dry ingredients into mixing bowl and make a "well"

Measure flour into bowl; make a "well" in the flour.

Add salt.

Pour eggs into well.

Turn mixer on to speed #1 (low)

Slowly add water.

Mix until dough is no longer sticky (add a little flour if needed).

Remove dough from mixer (peel it down from hook)

Work into a ball-shaped mound.

Place on cutting board to rest.

Cut large mound into 8-10 pieces.

Flour each piece.

Run through pasta roller.

Cut into thirds.

Run each third through cutter.

Lay out to dry.

Kids don't like to lay noodles out. But it has to be done.

CHICKEN

Breasts - 35 pounds; with skin & bone

Thighs - 35 pounds; thigh quarters with skin & bone

Chicken Soup Base

(Skin, bones, and celery are all thrown away.)

PLAN: Wash.

Cook.

Separate broth

Cool (fast)

This is probably the most delicate part of the whole operation.  Chicken can go "bad" easily so it's important to take proper care of it - promptly.  These directions work very well!!

Place chicken in commercial skillet; add water to cover well.

Add salt and pepper.

Boil until well done (about 1 hour).

Remove chicken and place in single layer in shallow counter pans (takes about 5)

Cool quickly by putting ice in one counter pan and placing the pan containing chicken on top of it.  Turn chicken several times to cool evenly and quickly.

Once cool, transfer the chicken to 2 counter pans, cover tightly with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator.

Drain and save broth into stockpots; add a large scoop of ice to each to cool quickly.

Cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator.

MASHED POTATOES

PLAN: (Have everyone coming to work on Friday night bring their favorite potato peeler from home.  There is only a couple in the church kitchen.)

Peel

Cut up

Put in water in skillet

Kids need to bring potato peelers

White potatoes 160 pounds

Cream cheese (8 oz) 8 bricks

Milk 4 gallons split between 8 pans, to be used on Sunday also

Butter/Oleo 24 sticks, to be used on Sunday also

Salt 1/4 c x 8 pans

Pepper 1/8 c x 8 pans

Peel potatoes.

Quarter.

Place in commercial skillet.

Add water to cover.

11:45 The Rules

Turn your cell phone off. - You don't have any other friends beside the ones here tonight and your parents are glad to get rid of you. They aren't calling. Don't use your phone for a light.

No swearing/profanity - Believe it or not this category includes inappropriate sexual discussions

No "extra curricular" activities permitted - For example, no sucking face with anyone

No roughhousing - Yes, this includes keeping someone else's property from them by force, sneaky-ness or running away from them

Do not leave the Church - If the area you are in is not climate controlled you are outside the church.

No cheating - If you are looking for a way around a rule, you are probably about to cheat and had best not attempt any deviations until you reach saint hood.

No Sneaking off - If you look around and there are not a significant number of other youth within sight, you have snuck off or you are the "Church". Stay in areas where everyone else is.

Snacks and drinks are allowed in the Youth Center and the Gym only. - If you are in transit between these two locations you may not eat or drink.

Do not open locked doors - If you have to do anything to a door that is more than just gently opening it, you are probably attempting to open a locked door.

Stay out of the rafters and organ loft - If you have to climb to get where you want to go and then you feel yourself having to balance on a beam high above the floor, chances are you are in the rafters.

Don't mess with church property - Do not touch the drums, pianos, spotlights, bongos - basically anything that might be fun at another time.

Sleep only in designated sleeping rooms. - No food or drink in designated sleeping rooms.

Expectations are as follows:

Participate as you can

Respect others

Listen

Clean up after yourself

If you would rather sit out or go to sleep, let me know where you are going and what you are doing.

The leader may randomly unlock a door from time to time.

12:30 LESSON

The Parable of the Chicken Noodle Soup Feast

Luke 14:16-24

[16] Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. [17] At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'

[18] "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'

[19] "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'

[20] "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'

[21] "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

[22] " 'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'

[23] "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

[24] I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.' "

Explanation

It's easy to become complacent, callused, and careless. In a strange way, the parable Jesus' told has a way of stirring us and infusing us with God's heart and perspective.

Jesus has been invited for Sabbath dinner to the home of a prominent Pharisee. The house is filled with the Pharisee's socially prominent guests who are all experts in the Law. Jesus heals a poor man and then comments on the social-climbing activities of guests who take the best seat to advance their social status.

The host had planned a large feast with room for a great number of guests. This was no small, intimate gathering. The host planned the feast based on the number of guests invited -- and those who had not previously indicated that they would not be present. Once the host has determined how many guests have accepted his invitation, then he is able to determine how many animals are to be killed and cooked.

Not to come to a banquet where one had previously indicated acceptance was a grave breach of social etiquette. In a society where one's social standing was determined by peer approval -- who is invited to whose dinners -- this was an act of social insult. You can't blame the host for being angry when he hears of this rejection by his social peers. He is livid! So he tells his servant to do what would have been social suicide had he not have already been rejected -- invite the lower classes.

The first invitation sweep was in the town streets and alleys. The second sweep was outside the town in the rural areas. The guests would be the poor, the beggars, and the impoverished. Such people would have felt very uncomfortable at the feast of a rich man, socially very out of place. The rich man didn't send out soldiers to sweep the area, round up everyone, and march them to his house, he instructed his servants not to take "No" for an answer. His servants were to encourage and strongly urge everyone they meet to accept this invitation.

In Sum

The host is God the Father, inviting his people to a huge banquet in the Kingdom of God. The rich and socially elite who shun the host's invitation are the ones who pretend they know religion. The poor and downtrodden are the common people, considered unclean by the socially elite.

DISCUSS

1. Rejection and Insult

We feel badly when we are rejected, but what about the Father? Think of His grief and broken heart. Think of His anger and mercy. This parable is a reminder of rejection.

2. Mercy and grace

The second theme I see is one of grace and mercy. Those who are not worthy to come to the host's table -- the poor, lame, crippled, blind -- are now invited. That is you and that is me. We are unworthy to eat at our Host's table, but we have been invited. This is God's mercy, pure and simple.

3. Evangelism

A third and closely related theme is evangelism. The poor, lame, crippled, and blind are now sought out. They are not just invited, but they are sought out and urged, compelled, to accept the invitation. We are the servants, and bring a marvelous message of invitation and acceptance and forgiveness. We must take our role seriously and urge the invitation wherever we are.

4. Judgment

But those who reject the invitation -- for whatever reason -- will not taste the Master's banquet.

5. Lame Excuses

I am sorry to say that in the lame excuses of the original guests I hear some of my own shallow excuses for not doing God's will. We may be able to convince ourselves that what we are doing is noble, but I am afraid that way too often our excuses are an insult to God. He is the Host and he is the Master of the house.

6. God's Plan

The final theme that I see here is one of God's plan. The host has prepared food for a large number of guests, and he won't be satisfied until his house is completely full. The Father is lingering, waiting, for each and every seat to be taken.

Prayer

Father, in this parable I sense your hurt and your urgency. Please help me to share your heart. Your sorrow, Your love for the poor, and the urgency of your invitation. Shake contentment out of me. Help me to be a worthy and obedient bearer of your invitation. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Questions

1. What did the pious guest in 14:15 believe about the feast in the Kingdom of God?

2. How credible are the invited guests' excuses for not coming? Who do the invited guests in the parable represent?

3. Why is the host angry? (14:21)

4. The host commands his servant to invite the poor and outcast both inside the town and outside in the rural areas. Who do these two groups probably represent?

5. Why is the host urgent about his invitation in 14:21-23?

6. What is the fine line between "compelling" people to come to the Lord, and gently leading them, fully respecting their own free will? How can we have both urgency and respect at the same time?

7. How does this parable illustrate the Father's judgment and his mercy?

1:30 UNDERGROUND CHURCH

Actually read everything below and check for clarity. It's no fun if everyone plays by different rules.

Set up: This is a lights out game so use caution and don't turn on or use any light. The Players are; Underground Church, Followers, or Guards.

How to play: There is one "Church" (a group of three).  The church is given a set amount of time to go and hide.  The Church will become the Guards for the next round.

The "Guards" try to keep the church from growing. Guards carry unobstructed "on" flashlights at all times. Their main job is to tag the Followers & lock them outside the building in the Courtyard (don't just look for the church).  If they tag or grab a Follower, the Follower must surrender (don't keep resisting) and be escorted out the nearest Courtyard door. Once the follower is outside, their job is to find a way back in, which is difficult because we will change the unlocked door from time to time. Everyone must continue to try to get in; they can't just sit outside and chat.

The "Followers" (No light sources allowed- including cell phones.) try to find the Underground Church without being tagged by the Guards or giving away where the Church is.  If a Guard finds the Church the round is over.  But, if the Church has 7-15 members (depends on how many play) the round is over and the UNDERGROUND CHURCH has won!

4:00 NOODLEN PART 2

NOODLES

Pick up any dry noodles.

Make more - same drill as part 1.

CHICKEN

Issue surgical gloves to anyone working with chicken.

De-bone (adult supervision required to avoid waste)

Return to frig.

MASHED POTATOS

Cook

Drain (retain water)

Mash

Put in pans in frig.

Boil.

When done, transfer to stock pots, take to commercial mixer.

Mash using flat blade.

Add 1 brick cream cheese; 1 stick butter, salt and pepper, milk.  (Make them thinner than you would at home - when they bake on Sunday, they will thicken up.)

USE NON-STICK COOKING SPRAY IN THE POTATO PANS BEFORE ADDING THE POTATOES!  (Your dish crew will love you for it!)

Place in medium counter pans.  Don't fill the pans more than 1/2 to 2/3 full.  There must be room for stirring during the re-heat procedure on Sunday.  (Use only pans that have metal lids.  We had a really ugly experience using foil paper one year - The convection ovens absolutely SHRED it!)

Be sure to keep all the water the potatoes were cooked in for use in the noodles.  Save it in stockpots and put it in the refrigerator.
