Looking Up

Say: You may not understand the importance and meaning of worship. Maybe you think it's just a boring meeting that your parents force you to attend. Maybe you think it doesn't apply to you at all. Worship isn't just singing, or reading the Bible, or praying. It's a combination of a few different aspects, including listening to God's word and what we can learn about it. We can worship anytime, anywhere-not just in church. Tonight's lesson provides the opportunity to discuss our church's worship services and to encourage you to take your worship services more seriously.

Break into Family Groups.

Worship

Pass out a 3x5 card to each youth.

Say: On one side of your card take 2 minutes and write down what worship means to you. Don't include your names, because we're going to collect and read them.

ASK:

"Why do you think worship is beneficial for Christians?

   "How does worship affect us?

   "How does it affect God?

"What are some ways that you can worship everyday-not just in church on Sundays?

This may include ideas like-saying a prayer in the shower, reading one verse in the morning, listening to some Christian music and thinking about the words, or spending a few minutes of quiet before bed. Communicate that worship isn't just church- it's what goes on in church.

Consider It

Say: I want you to consider our worship services and show me how you rate them. Close your eyes and don't look to see how your neighbor is voting. For "Never boring" cross your arms; for "Sometimes boring" raise one arm; for "Always boring" raise both arms. (Wait) Don't change your vote and open your eyes.

Find a "scribe" and have them write down the answers to the following questions.

ASK:

"What makes it boring or not boring for you?

One thing I'd like to change about church is-

Collect the cards and discuss them.

ASK:

"What gets you excited to praise God?

"Is it okay if a part of the service is boring?

(It's okay-worship is different for everyone, especially in a church with mixed ages.)

Carnivore Carnival

Say: We are preparing a Worship Service for our 2010 Caravan and we need to raise funds to support the trip. Our last fundraiser for this Worship is the Carnivore Carnival. It will feature a choice of three different grilled meats and an end of the year carnival.

We are going to use our Family Groups to list and find materials here in the church to make the carnival games. Each Family has four games to work on and perfect. Use the following list to make notes on where to find or buy items for your families booths. Actually go and find the items, but leave them where they are noting on this sheet where to go to gather everything you'll need the day of the Carnivore Carnival!

Courage

Juke Box Pick the music playing if you win the game&ldots; What's the game

Pick up Ducks This classic game for all ages required a shallow plastic wading pool. Place floating ducks in a few inches of water. If you can't ducks what else will work? Some are labeled "C" for candy; others are labeled "P" for prize. Everyone gets a turn to pick a duck and win a prize.

Needle in a Haystack This is an inexpensive game to pull together. Lay out a large tarp fill the center with hay. Find someone to donate a bale of hay. The idea is to hide straws or unsharpened pencils in it. It is hard to find either one. Of course, a found pencil is a prize and a found straw gets you candy or another prize.

Knock Off Soft, fiber filled balls are used to throw at the stuffed animals/plastic bottles/cans from a designated distance. Knock down one and you get a prize. This game needs to be in a corner or against a wall or your workers will be chasing balls all day.

Workin

Beanbag Toss We might have this board downstairs. Use three or four beanbags to play the game. If no one knows how to sew use old socks to make bean-bags. Tie them off securely after filling them with rice - fling socks.

Ball Toss Children's ministries has a pop up one of these. See if you can find it.

Bucket Bonanza Attach empty coffee cans about 8-10 inches evenly apart on narrow board. They can be attached by running a short screw through the can into the board. The object of this game is to toss a ping-pong ball in each can one at a time without missing. You can number and paint cans different colors prior to assembly.

Basketball Shoot Use the short Fun Ball goals.

Strength

Kick Bowling Used 2 liter soda bottles for bowling pins. Refill empty bottles about half full of water. Use any ball available. Kick a soccer ball at the "pin".

Ping Pong Pop Get a plastic bowl and a cup and super glued them to a large cardboard box that when cut will stand at an angle on its own. Give Kids three ping-pong balls to toss into the set up. Think skeet ball.

Shell Game Three plastic bowls or cups turned upside down on a table serve as coconut shells. Hide a ping pong ball under one and shuffle. See if the player can pick which bowl/cup the ball is under.

Cake Walk Mark off on the walk area a circle with numbers. Players are to start out standing on a square that is numbered, one person per square. Start playing music and when you it stops players should end up on a numbered square. Once everyone is standing on a number draw out a number from a hat. The player standing on the corresponding number wins a 2ltr. If no one is standing on one of the numbers pulled, pull out another number until someone wins.

Faith

Face Painting This is a popular and must have table for our carnival. Use washable magic markers. Remind parents it becomes more permanent with time & Finger Nail Painting Set up a table to paint fingernails. Purchase cotton swabs, nail polish and nail polish remover (maybe from the dollar store).

Golf Zone Make a putting target that will stand up made out of cardboard. Then paint a fun background on it. Cut holes at the bottom for the players to putt through. The holes can be different sizes for different age levels or prize awards. Have an area that will make someone ring a bell or blow a horn. Maybe call them Mouse Holes.

Go To Jail Required: A room for the jail, Jailer, Sheriff and warrants. Charge $1 to jail someone for 5 minutes. Parents and kids can pay to issue a warrant for someone's arrest. This involves that person going with the sheriff to point out the person that is supposed to be sent to jail. Once that person is put into the jail, they have to serve his or her time or we can give them the option of bailing themselves out for another $1.

Sucker Tree Pull out a sucker that is marked on the bottom of the stick, for a prize and they win the sucker.

Return to the gym for the closing

Closing

Work Zone & High Way

Gather in a closing circle.

Say: Worship is a verb, not a noun. It isn't something we attend in order to be entertained. Instead, it is something we do. The worship service brings everyone in the church together, both young and old, which is important. The church is people, the community of God, and it is important for the church to have that common experience together. Corporate worship (worship with others) is one way we acknowledge the church is the body of Christ and how much we need each other.

Worship is for God, not for us. The question to ask after a worship service is not "Did I like it?" but "Did God like it?" and "Did I do my best for him?"

Close in Prayer:

Dear Lord, let us go forth tonight satisfied but eager to know more, happy but ready to face challenges, feeling loved and eager to love, knowing difficult times may lie ahead but also knowing we can have faith in You.  For these things we pray in Your name,

Amen

Say the UMYF Benediction and turn out into the world.

Gather for this lesson: DV8 stuff, Family groups list, about 60 3x5 cards, pens, 40 Components of Worship Cards
