A Sharing It's Your Move Work Zone and High Way Eat, make announcements -C-van Chili Dinner next week Spring break in 2 weeks! Introduce the session: A Sharing Needed: 10 c. Bisquick baking mix, ½ & 1/8 tsp. baking soda, 2 & 1/2 c. all-purpose flour (sifted), 2 & 1/2 c. milk, 5 eggs, measuring cup, ½ & 1/8 tsp., a little extra flower, non-stick spray, 5 flat pans (for needing dough, 5 bowls for mixing dough. Heat ovens to 450 degrees, 5 recipe cards as follows:
PAN BISCUITS 2 c. Bisquick baking mix 1/2 c. milk 1 egg 1/8 tsp. baking soda 1/2 c. all-purpose flour (sifted) Heat oven to 450 degrees. Grease 14 x 28 x 1 inch pan (use the one you kneed the dough on after preparing). Combine baking mix, milk, egg and baking soda until soft dough forms. Mix in enough of the flour to make dough easy to handle. Turn onto floured board. Knead in remaining flour until smooth dough forms. Spread in pan. Let stand 2 to 3 minutes. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Makes about 45 biscuits. Ahead of time have the ingredients at a main table with only enough measuring instruments for one group. Eventually the groups will mix the ingredients and prepare the dough. Read: Exodus 12:11 In this manner you shall eat it: fully clothed, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD's Passover. ASK: * What event is going on in this passage? * Does everyone know what happened in Egypt during the Passover? Emphasize the fact that the people ate it in haste - there was work to be done, not only to prepare to leave Egypt, but also the actual departure. ASK: * Have you ever had to eat quickly? Give me some examples. Did you have something important to do, whether you liked it or not (e.g. school, sports, family outings)? Say: We as Christians are meant to eat the bread of communion, not so we can sit around and get fat, but because we are being fed for the work ahead of us - being Christ's disciples and spreading His Word to the world. To night we are going to work a little harder at coming together and communing. We have several activities that should help. We are going to start by making bread which we will eat a little later on.
Break into small groups Divide: When we break into groups, choose one member to be the "mixer" this person will mix your dough and must first go wash his or her hands. Only one member of your group is allowed at the main table at a time and may make only one trip for one ingredient. This is not a race. This is an exercise in community. Form 5 groups of 6-8 people however you want!
Moving In Work Zone & High Way While the bread is baking, play a game. Scatter Needed: Two soft play ball & 2 ½ pool noodles. Have two games of no more than 20 each. This is dodge ball with a twist. Have everyone bunch up in the middle, then the leader throws the ball up in the air and yells, "SCATTER!" Everyone runs away except the few brave souls who attempt to get the ball. Anyone can get the ball and when they do, they may take three steps but no more. He or she can throw the ball at anyone they like. If they hit someone, the person who is hit must sit down where he or she was hit. This person can get the ball in future rounds but must not move from the spot where they were hit. If they hit someone who is standing up, then that person must sit down and the person who was sitting can get back up and run around. In addition, if a person is down and is hit with the ball because of a throw (not a rolling or bouncing ball) throw play stops. He or she must hand tag someone who is up. When tagged, the person standing up must sit down and the person who was down is up again. If someone is down and a ball is reachable for them but they put forth no effort to continue to play they get three lashes with "the Noodle" for each offence. Being a Christian is hard work! Keep working. One more twist, if two people who have been hit are sitting down close enough to presumably touch then they both must get up and return to play. Play until the bread is done and ready to be served.
Moving Up Work Zone & High Way (Small Groups) The Fellowship Divide back into the earlier small groups, having each one tale their pan of bread to the Youth & Activity Centers and find a place away from the other groups. Say: When Jesus broke the bread and passed the cup to his disciples at the Last Supper, he knew he would soon be turned over to the authorities and crucified. ASK: * Do you think Jesus knew the trial and punishment his disciples would face as they spread the good news about him after his death and resurrection would extend to us. Explain your thoughts. * Why is it so hard to be a Christian? * Why do you think, of all the possible things he could have chosen, Jesus chose a loaf of bread and a cup as symbols by which people were to remember him? * In what ways does God use the Lord's Supper to bring us strength for the future? * What area of your life do you need strength in right now? * How will the memory of the sacrifice God made give you additional strength to face your future?
Moving On Work Zone & High Way (Small Groups) Have someone read Exodus 12:13 The blood shall be a sign for you, upon the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall fall upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Say: Blood is a sign and the means by which we find salvation. The blood of the lamb was shed for the purpose of keeping Israel safe from the angel of the Lord. ASK: * Have you ever had a cut that really bled? Was it worth the cost of your blood? * What sacrifices do we make in our lives for those around us? * Is having faith while still experiencing doubt a sacrifice? * Is it possible for some people to love others so much they would give up their own life to save another? * Is it possible for God to live among us? * Believing that God came in human form to earth is mater of faith or is it something else?
Moving Out High Way (Small Groups) Have someone read Luke 22:14-23, And when the hour came, he sat at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you I shall not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. But behold the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. For the Son of man goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" And they began to question one another, which of them it was that would do this. Say: Did you notice how Jesus follows up the meal of communion with the statement that someone is about to betray Him? Judas being the betrayer is brought to light, because it is exact opposite of the fellowship that Jesus has just instituted. When the people eat this meal together, it is meant to bring them closer together, the way that other meals bring people together, only more so. There are those among you right now that think Christianity in general is a waste of time. If we don't reach out to them right now, they will suffer the fate of Judas - Only after betraying "the Faith" will they come to realize that separation from God results in a meaningless life. ASK: * Now, with whom would we be willing to share a meal? * How many people do we take communion with at church that we have never known? * How many people that we regularly eat with are there with whom we have never displayed our faith? * Why do you think we used the word "displayed" in the previous question?
Return to the Family Life Center
Closing Work Zone & High Way ASK: * What did you learn here tonight? Get a few answers Say: When we share communion, we share in the sacrifice that God made for us. This sacrifice isn't only so we can sit on our pews and think about it. It is a sacrifice that gives us something to hurry out and do - be disciples and make disciples. It is a sacrifice that moves us to avoid evil, and inspires us to sacrifice for others. It is a sacrifice that brings us together as one Church; to encourage one another, to eat together as one family, and to welcome others into God's family. Communion is a meal based upon the sacrifice of Christ, and we eat and drink it because in the act of communion we share with one another God's grace. We are the body of Christ, and Christ is with us. When the world looks for Christ, they find Him through us, and the only reason we can show Christ to the world is because we receive His sacrifice, together as one body.
Close in prayer. Dear Lord thank you for Your gift of grace through the sacrifice of Christ. Help us to live as Christian as we struggle to shed the fear that others might see us live our lives in Your honor. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Join hands, right over left, and say the UMYF benediction.
